February 26 2007 (Jewswire.com) - The United Synagogue Community Division has co-ordinated with a record 27 communities this year to send almost 800 food parcels to elderly and isolated members during the festival period. Volunteers from the US and TRIBE filled the mishloach manot boxes on Sunday with humantaschen, grape juice, cake, pretzels and chocolates.
In a separate initiative, over 3000 members of Tribe Kids (aged 0 to11) will receive a Tribe mishloach manot box to fill and give to their friends together with a flyer on all the events happening in US shuls this Purim.
Candice Woolfson Research & Membership Executive, acting Social Action Coordinator said, "We’re delighted by the huge response to our mishloach manot offer this year. Purim is a joyous occasion for the community but in the midst of our celebration, we are told to remember those who are in need of our support and assistance. We hope our mishloach manot boxes will enable those members who do not normally have the opportunity to participate in Purim, to enjoy the festivities.
“Without the US’ dedicated team of volunteers and the generous support of Yarden, we would not be able to provide such a rewarding service.”
Rabbi Shaw, Executive Director of TRIBE: “With over 3,000 young Tribe members receiving mishloach manot boxes this year, it will enable them all to carry out the very special mitzvah of giving gifts to friends and family at this time.”
