30 January 2007 (Jewswire.com) - In a unique synthesis of time-honoured Jewish ethics and 21st century environmental concern, the Board of Deputies of British Jews and The Noah Project are proud to announce the launch of The Big Green Jewish Website. (To preview the site, visit http://www.biggreenjewish.org/index.php)

The website will be formally launched by David Miliband MP, Secretary of State for the Environment on Thursday, 1 February 2007 from 11.45 am to 1 pm at the Board of Deputies for British Jews, 6 Bloomsbury Square, London WC1. (RSVP to Winston.Pickett@bod.org.uk)

Designed to promote environmentalism through an engagement with biblical, rabbinic and contemporary Jewish sources, the Big Green Jewish Website offers a rich resource of inspirational and practical information. Its user-friendly and interactive format offers examples of good practice by individuals, synagogues, organisations, schools and businesses.

Commenting on the project Mr Miliband said:

"It is a great pleasure to be associated with the launch of this innovative and useful initiative. Climate change is one of the biggest crises we are facing. The Big Green Jewish Website is a prime example of the valuable role that faith communities and their rich traditions can play in tackling this challenge.”

The website is the initiative of The Noah Project, the UK’s only Jewish ecological group established to promote ‘education, celebration and action’ for the environment within the Jewish community, and is supported by the Board of Deputies.

The Big Green Jewish Website is also designed for wider application, forming a key component as a part of the Board of Deputies’ overall environmental strategy. Accordingly, the Board of Deputies is exploring ways in which to raise awareness of the ways in which the community can become more eco-friendly. The Board will also share material and actively cooperate with other faith groups and environmental bodies working in this field.

Said Henry Grunwald, QC, President of the Board of Deputies:

“The Big Green Jewish Website is an exciting initiative and a useful resource for all communities seeking to address the challenges of the environment and global climate change. These are issues that will not only affect us during our lifetime, but l’dor va dor – for generations to come. The fact that we’ve been able to collaborate with resources like the Noah Project shows the kind of timely and relevant cross-communal work the Board of Deputies can be leading on at this juncture.”

A culmination of four years’ work across the communal spectrum

The Noah Project’s Big Green Jewish Website (BGJW) is supported by the Board of Deputies of British Jews and has been endorsed across the Jewish community by five synagogal bodies. Patrons from each include: Rabbi Naftali Brawer (United Synagogue), Rabbi Abraham Levy (Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue), Rabbi Charles Middleburgh (Liberal Movement) Rabbi Marc Weiner (Reform Judaism) and Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg (Masorti).

Key individuals responsible for its creation include Neville Sassienie, Chair of the Board of Deputies’ Environment and Social Issues Action Group; and Vivienne Cato, Chair of The Noah Project and editor of the website.

The site has been designed by Danny Bermant of Brainstorm Design Ltd.

The BGJW is the culmination of over four year’s work during which the project has

won an award from the Alliance for Religions and Conservation as a Sacred Gift to the Planet presented by the Duke of Edinburgh;

featured as a case study in the government’s “Sustainable Development Commission” report on UK Faith Groups; and

initiated a 24-hour environmental “ Tikkun (Repair) Trek” at Limmudfest, a UK-based popular cross-communal four-day educational festival held every summer.

The Board of Deputies is the representative body of the British Jewish Community.
