12 January 2007 (Jewswire.com) - The final competition in the first ever Simply Manischewitz Cook-Off will be held at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel on February 1, 2007, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This national cooking competition is the culmination of three successful regional events held in Newark, NJ (10/26/06); Ft. Lauderdale, FL (11/9/06); and Costa Mesa, CA (12/14/06).

On February 1st, six finalists (two from each region) will prepare their prize winning recipes in a live cooking competition for the chance to win a $20,000 grand prize package including a General Electric Profile kitchen, cash and more. The Simply Manischewitz Cook-Off is free, open to the public and highlights quick and easy kosher dishes perfect for the Jewish holidays and everyday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg is proclaiming February 1, 2007 as Simply Manischewitz Cook-Off Day.

The six finalists competing on February 1, 2007 are:

 Rayzel Yaish from Bergenfield, NJ- “Middle Eastern Falafel Stuffed Peppers”

 Sharon Ricci from Mendon, NY- “Matzo Brunch Bake”

 Candace McMenamin from Lexington, SC- “Sweet Potato Encrusted Chicken”

 Laura Diamond from Apopka, FL- “Savory Stuffed Mushrooms”

 Michaela Rosenthal from Woodland Hills, CA- “Whitefish and Potato Knish”

 Andrea Bloom from Long Beach, CA- “Pea and Fennel Soup”

The competition will be judged by panel of experts including: best-selling cookbook author and Kosher Diva, Susie Fishbein; Chef George McNeil, CMC Vice President Culinary Corporate Chef of the Ritz Carlton Hotels; Chef Bill Strynkowski from Cooking Light magazine, broadcaster of WFMU Jewish Music Nachum Segal; representative from General Electric and Manischewitz, editor of The Jewish Week Liel Leibovitz, as well as the Executive Chef Achilles Poliviou from the Marriott Marquis. This panel of food experts will judge the recipes based on the following criteria: taste, 50%; ease of preparation, 20%; appearance, 15%; and originality, 15%. The competition follows kosher guidelines under the supervision of the Manischewitz Rabbi, Rabbi Horowitz.

Thirty semi-finalists (10 semi-finalists per region) were selected from thousands of entries nationwide. This cook-off contest was designed to encourage home cooks to prepare a delicious and simple kosher dish using at least one Manischewitz product. Each recipe was to be prepared and cooked in less than one hour using a total of ten ingredients or less. The contest began in May 2006.
