18 January 2007 (Jewswire.com) - Colel Chabad, the largest non-profit social welfare organization in Israel, announced today that it was overwhelmed by a record-breaking number of requests for food during 2006.
Over the course of the previous twelve months, the organization has broken records in every category and distributed 910,675 hot meals to the poor and hungry, 75,000 food packages to poverty stricken families, 26,000 morning snacks to underprivileged school students and 1,600 daily meals to families-in-need.
Operating in 55 cities and local councils throughout Israel, Colel Chabad’s behind-the-scene initiatives have emerged as especially important in light of the country’s growing poverty and widening income gaps. The organization works hard to rectify these unfortunate circumstances by providing assistance to Israelis from all walks of life.
“At Colel Chabad we run a massive operation to provide any and all assistance to those in need, no matter who they are or where they come from,” stated Sholom Duchman, Colel Chabad’s Director. “As income gaps widen in Israel, we’re here to make sure that those who are left behind are not forgotten.”
Colel Chabad, whose name mistakenly suggests a yeshiva learning institute from the Chabad movement, is actually Israel’s largest social welfare organization. Founded in 1788 Colel Chabad is the oldest continuously operating charity of its kind in Israel. Today, the organization operates as an umbrella philanthropy group quietly supporting a massive network of soup kitchens, day care centers, dental and medical clinics, senior centers, immigrant absorption programs, and other social welfare projects throughout Israel.
