February 15 2007 (Jewswire.com) - The second annual national Purim Spiel-off is set to be a might inter-community clash, as six teams of young people from Reform synagogues across the country battle it out to be Spiel-off champions.
Groups of eight people from school years 7-11 are working together to create a comic play or film based around their interpretation of the story of Purim. They have planned and rehearsed their performances, and will enter the competition next Saturday, bringing along friends and family to cheer them on. Any money raised will go directly to a charity that the youth will choose, and to the RSY-Netzer financial assistance fund.
The number of community entries has doubled from last year, where Maidenhead prevailed against Menorah and Sinai, with a stunning film portraying the Purim story as a High School gang film tackling issues around bullying and anti-Semitism. This year the competition will be hotly contested by three new additions from SWESRS, Weybridge (NWSS) and Alyth (NWRS). Three drama based productions and three films are being furiously rehearsed in preparation for the coming clash.
The Reform Movement’s Youth & Community Worker, Jon Littman, who is organising the event, said: “The contest is the climax of a whole weekend of activities for the participants. It is a fantastic opportunity for friends from RSY-Netzer and Reform community youth clubs from across the country to meet up and get to know one another. There will be plenty of time over the weekend to socialise and join activities, as well as to rehearse and perfect their performances.”
The contest will be held at Maidenhead Town Hall on Saturday 24th February, doors open at 7pm. Tickets: £5 per adult, activities and refreshments will be provided. Contact Jon Littman on 0208 349 5670 for more information.
