(TEL AVIV, 28 APRIL 2008) Australian parliamentarian Mr. Evan Thornley, MP is leading a high level commerce mission of close to 50 top Australian business personalities to Israel this week. The group, which arrived Sunday, will meet with leading Israeli companies, politicians and business personalities during their week-long stay and will explore possibilities for investment, trade and cooperation with their Israeli counterparts.

Thornley, who today serves as a Member of the Legislative Council and Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier in Australia’s State of Victoria, is also widely recognized as the leading Internet guru in the country. In 1995, Thornley co-founded, along with his wife Tracey Ellery, an online advertising and technology start-up called LookSmart (NASDAQ: LOOK). He became the country’s first Internet billionaire when he took the company public in 1999.

According to Israel-Australia Chamber of Commerce CEO Paul Israel, “MP Thornley’s current visit, heading this large and prestigious delegation, is a high point of the technology and business relationship between the two countries. The caliber of the visiting group symbolizes both the success of the Australian commercial scene as well as the esteem in which Israeli technology companies are held.”

Members of the delegation include representatives of some of Australia’s most prominent and successful business people and high net-worth families. In addition, the group includes leaders of a number of the country’s premier universities, a large number of investment companies, entrepreneurs and high-tech players, as well as government officials.

Also taking part in the mission will be University of Melbourne’s CEO, Professor Glyn Davis, who last week co-hosted the Australia 2020 Summit with the country’s Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd. The groundbreaking, forward-looking summit comprised 1000 delegates and aimed to help shape a long term strategy for Australia’s future. Modeled on similar 2020 summits being held in countries across the globe, the conference discussed Australia’s long-term future in ten wide ranging fields. Among other aims of the mission, Davis will be looking to learn more about Israel’s success in turning academic research into profitable commercial ventures.

During the course of the mission, the group will meet with many of Israel’s top political leaders including President Shimon Peres, Ministers Vilnai, Dichter, Herzog and Ben Sasson. They will also meet the presidents of a number of Israeli universities as well as business and financial personalities including Bank of Israel Governor Professor Stanley Fischer, Chief Scientist Eli Opper, Orna Berry, Zohar Zissapel, Uri Shani, Elisha Yanay and Dov Moran.

Members of the mission will also participate in the opening ceremony of the Park of the Australian Soldier and unveiling of the Australian Light Horse Memorial in Be’er Sheva, along with two heads of state, Israel President Shimon Peres and Major Michael Jeffrey, Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia. The park is designed to pay tribute to those Australians who served in the Middle East during the two world wars and subsequent peace operations, and the memorial will commemorate 90 years since the famous victorious charge of the Australian Mounted Division against Ottoman positions at Be’er Sheva on 31 October 1917.
