Limmud Conference 2007 Announces Unparalleled Arts Line-Up

Limmud announced its Conference ‘07 arts line-up this week, with Neshama Carlebach – daughter of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach – a star attraction.

Naomi Soetendorp, volunteer Arts and Culture Co-ordinator for Limmud Conference ‘07, said ‘This is a rare opportunity to hear Neshama singing in this country in the warm and intimate atmosphere of Limmud Conference. She has a huge following around the world and her participation is already causing a buzz of excitement’.

Described by the Guardian as ‘the Jewish Edinburgh fringe’, Conference is Limmud’s flagship event and this year will be held at the University of Warwick from Sunday 23 December to Thursday 27 December. Along with being a premier educational event, Limmud Conference is also a world-class arts festival, boasting an unparalleled line-up from across the Jewish world.

Amongst this year’s top arts attractions are the first UK gigs of hot new Israeli group ‘Pshutei Ha’am’ (‘Simple People’), formed by Gilad Vitai and Roi Levi as the breakaway from the multi-award-winning supergroup they founded and starred in, ‘Shotei HaNevuah’ (‘Fools of Propehcy’); Melissa Shiff, a multi-media conceptual artist; Canada’s Nephesh Theatre – performing their critically acclaimed version of Bashevis Singer’s ‘Gimpel the Fool’; six piece Israeli dance troupe ‘Eilat’; Jeremy Hulsh of rocking Israeli independent record label Oleh; Sephardic balladeer Ramon Tasat from Argentina; American performance poet Matthue Roth; and London-based Joel Stanley’s Merkavah Theatre, performing Yeshivah of the Absurd, an anarchic, site-specific piece fusing performance, improvisation and Jewish learning. Late night music will be run by Daniel Silverstein of Psychosemitic – ‘breaking down barriers of ignorance through celebration and education’ and there will be arts spaces – open all hours – for attendees to develop their own projects and to work with artist-in-residence, Elliott Tucker.

Limmud Conference ’07 Chair Kevin Sefton told us: ‘I'm excited about hearing stories from old friends of Limmud, like Joel Grishaver and newer talents like the electrifying Rachel Rose Reid. I'm looking forwarded to the messy, musical mash up of New York’s Hasidic Hip-Hop star Y-Love and the unexpected musical collaborations in the Acoustic Café. There is so much to see, hear and discover. There will be street performers, an art gallery, films, film makers, poets, story telling and dance’.

‘Come to Limmud Conference’, Soetendorp says, ‘and immerse yourself in all that’s good about being Jewish today. You’ll be moved, motivated and inspired. You can curl up in a darkened room with one you love and a good movie or hurl yourself onstage to give the world a piece of your mind as a hard slamming performance poet. You can find out the hottest places to hear Jewish music in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Brooklyn and Shoreditch. You’ll be able to tell your grandchildren: ‘I was there when ...’ - musical history will be made at Limmud this year. Theatre history will be made at Limmud this year. Prepare to be amazed, astonished and comprehensively entertained’.

Prices for a full place at Conference, including 5 days accommodation, food and the choice of 300 presenters and 900 sessions start from as little as ₤355. Limmud also offers bursaries and a scholarship scheme for under-30s, where a ₤220 discount is available in return for a few hours of volunteer time per day.

Notes to Editors - About Limmud

Limmud is one of the most exciting and innovative educational organisations in the British-Jewish community. Over 5,000 people, from every walk of life, background, religious affiliation and age will have attended at least one Limmud event in 2007 - and over 20,000 have attended a Limmud event since it began 25 years ago. Organised almost entirely by close to 600 volunteers, the Limmud model of cross-communal, multi-generational Jewish education has been replicated throughout the world. Limmud continues to work with over 20 Limmud International Groups from all around the world (from the Former Soviet Union to New York; Istanbul to Cape Town; Sydney to Berlin; Toronto to The Galil – and most places in between) who have imported the Limmud model into their own communities. Limmud has without doubt become one of British-Jewry’s greatest ever exports.

We aim to enable each participant to go one step further on their own Jewish journey by offering access to some of the world's most dynamic Jewish educators, performers, thinkers and teachers. They use all educational styles including lectures, workshops, text-study sessions, film, debates, meditation, discussions, exhibits and performances to ensure that there is always ‘something for everyone'. Indeed, the content of a typical Limmud event is as diverse as its participants.

Additional Quotes

“The Arts and Culture Team have dedicated many dozens of hours to producing an outstanding line-up of Jewish talent from around the world” said Zila Orenstein, Vice Chair of Limmud Conference. “We’re particularly proud to able to offer rare opportunities for our participants to experience performances by artists who have either never been seen in the UK, or who may only come over to our side of the pond once in a decade. Limmud now has the reputation to attract so many of these award-winning artists and performers who want to be part of our community of learning.”
