March 12 2007 ( - Lee Miskin wrote Lewisburg 19370 about thirty years after living it. His remarkable story is now in print and available at Lulu (, the world’s fastest-growing provider of print-on-demand books.

This is a story about finding inner strength in the face of great adversity and prejudice, and surviving by one’s wits.

“There is one thing you learn very well in prison – that what a man is reputed to be is not necessarily so. It is in prison that a man’s true nature often comes out… the most evil and cruel, or the most gentle and kind. The inmate is stripped of all exterior camouflage and the real “you” shows. Frequently, the worst comes out, but occasionally a man finds that this is his finest hour.”

-- Lee Miskin, Lewisburg 19730.

Lee Miskin served nearly five years at the federal prison at Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. While incarcerated, he educated himself, ran the electrical shop, was on the debating team, and in an unexpected turn of events, was elected leader of the Jewish group of prisoners, a minor yet influential group of from twelve to fifteen men (about ten percent of the total prison population).

Each chapter of Lewisburg 19370 is a story in itself. Some are character studies from the author’s observations, experiences, and relationships with famous inmates like Alger Hiss, David Greenglass, and Harry Gold – and the not-so-famous but equally fascinating Snags Lewis, Kohen with a “K” and many more. Other chapters describe the dangers, challenges, isolation, and small miracles of daily life in a federal penitentiary.

Together they tell a larger story… of the power of purpose and community, and of surviving as a Jew (or other targeted minority) at about anytime or anyplace throughout history.

“Independent publishing and print-on-demand is the wave of the future,” says Dale Vinicur of Devira Press. “The free, fast, and easy Lulu tools have allowed us to publish Lee Miskin’s story exactly as he envisioned it with no upfront printing costs!
