31 January 2007 (Jewswire.com) - JCD has established links with the Gibraltar Jewish community for the first time after executive director Daniel Burger paid them a flying visit last week.

Burger met with community leaders and says that JCD, formerly Jewish Child’s day, is hoping to establish a project this year for which the whole community can raise funds.

“I was very impressed by what I saw and the enthusiasm for the work of JCD among the schoolchildren I met,” said Burger, who visited both the Hebrew Primary School and the Jewish High School for Girls.

“Children at the Hebrew Primary School handed over £750 that they had raised by completing the Benjamin Bear sticker packs and they were very excited when I told them how their money was going to be used to help other less privileged children. I also handed out gifts to the children in appreciation of their fund-raising efforts.”

Nicole Garson, head teacher at the school, said: “I was delighted that Daniel made the effort to come over to collect the cheque on behalf of JCD. The children were really interested to hear about the work JCD does throughout the world.”

Burger also met with James Levy, president of the Gibraltar Jewish community, Rabbi Roni Hassid, rabbi of Gibraltar and Solly Garson, head teacher of the girls’ school.

He also met former Leicester resident, Jo Abergel, who heads a fund-raising committee on the island which is hoping to pledge some of its funds to JCD.
