9 November 2006 (Jewswire.com) - Israeli Prime Minster Ehud Olmert will cap off a roster of Israel and North America's leading political dignitaries when he addresses the United Jewish Communities 2006 General Assembly (GA) next Tuesday, Nov. 14 at 4:15 p.m. in Hall B of the Los Angeles Convention.
The Prime Minister's speech - "The New Front Lines: Facing the Future Together" - is his first in-person remarks to the North American Jewish community since the beginning of Israel's conflict this summer with Hezbollah in Lebanon. In this appearance, the day after his meeting with President Bush in Washington, the Prime Minister's remarks are expected to focus on the pivotal moment in Israel-Diaspora relations at which we now stand, following a year of tremendous regional tumult during which the United Jewish Communities raised over $350 million in its Israel Emergency Campaign drive.
In addition to the prime minister, Israeli officials slated to appear at the GA include Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni; Minister of Tourism Isaac Herzog; Minister of Education Yuli Tamir; and Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu. Other notable figures include Fareed Zakaria, editor of Newsweek International, Mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa and Bernard Henri-Levy, French philosopher and author of "Who Killed Daniel Pearl?"
A full program schedule is available at http://www.ujc.org/ga .
The General Assembly, which runs from Nov. 12 - 15, is the largest annual gathering of Jewish community leaders from throughout North America, Israel, and elsewhere overseas. Nearly 4,000 participants, all active in the Jewish federation movement and philanthropy, will convene for a four-day program, featuring major plenary sessions, forums, workshops and programs addressing key issues and challenges central to the Jewish community, including new global realities highlighted by Israel's recent defensive war.
United Jewish Communities (UJC) is the country's second largest charity. UJC represents 155 Jewish federations and 400 independent communities across North America.
