7 November 2006 (Jewswire.com) - On a visit to Krakow in June 2002 His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales saw the living circumstances of the remaining elderly members of the Jewish community whom he met whilst in Kazimierz. He was deeply moved by their plight, and motivated to change their lives for the better. On his return to the UK, he contacted World Jewish Relief, the London based charity which provides humanitarian aid for Jews in need around the world.
After careful assessments and much consultation with the local community, World Jewish Relief is delighted to invite you to the groundbreaking as the building work begins for a Jewish welfare and community centre of which HRH The Prince of Wales is the Patron.
Thanks to his vision, this centre will be valued by all members of the community, and make a huge difference to their lives. His Royal Highness also made a substantial personal donation to the project from his own funds.
The community centre will be established in the heart of Krakow where all members of the community can come together for social, educational and religious programmes. The centre is not a commercial venture. It is a one which is dedicated solely to satisfy the communal welfare, educational, social, religious, medical and daycare needs of people of all ages within the community. It will also host exhibitions and will be open to the thousands of tourists who visit Krakow each year, Jews and non-Jews alike.
The project will revitalise a community that has suffered so much over the years and will enable the rich history of Jewish life in Krakow to be rekindled and enhanced.
