12 December 2006 (Jewswire.com) - The tournament is open to people of all faiths, all over the world. Game registration is free of charge to all MahjongTime.com subscribers. Subscriptions start at $4.95 for one month.
The competition takes place on www.MahjongTime.com, starting Saturday, December 16, at 8:30 pm, United States Eastern Standard Time. A new elimination round starts each night thereafter, through Tuesday, December 19, so participants can enter any night and still have a chance to make it to the playoffs, held on Thursday night, December 21.
The four players at the "final table" will win cash prizes from $2,000 to $250. A commemorative Hanukkah mahjong tile will be given to every registered player. MahjongTime will also grant an automated mahjong table to the community center that has the most registered participants. The winners will be announced on Saturday night, December 23 at 8:30 pm, US EST.
Mahjong has been immensely popular in Jewish communities, especially in the United States, for at least a century. As it is customary to play games during Hanukkah, the MahjongTime.com team decided to create a competition in honor of the holiday.
Mahjongtime.com, the world's largest online mahjong community, is coming fresh off the huge success of their World Online Mahjong Championship in October, where players competed in both the Hong Kong Rules and Chinese Official Rules versions of the game. The Hanukkah competition, however, will play by the American Rules, which had been made the standard regulation of the game amongst Jewish community mahjong circles in the 1920s.
