March 19 2007 (Jewswire.com) - A medical anti-boycott group was formed this week after a meeting of senior Jewish physicians. The meeting, convened by the Fair Play Campaign Group (FPCG) and chaired by Lord Turnberg, discussed current activities targetting Israeli doctors, the relationship between British and Israeli medicine and the threats to that relationship. This initiative was led by FPCG as a part of its strategy to pre-empt boycott campaigns in a variety of sectors. FPCG co-Chairs Henry Grunwald QC and Brian Kerner attended.
Participants agreed to establish the Fair Play Medical Group, which would operate within the Jewish Medical Association (UK), and will be supported by FPCG. The group will take proactive steps to showcase positive developments and breakthroughs in Israeli medicine, monitor portrayals of Israel emanating from within British medicine, and organise responses where appropriate.
Although there is not a mainstream boycott movement in the medical field, there are occasional calls to cut links, and false accusations of Israel denying Palestinian access to doctors and hospitals. The Fair Play Medical Group aims to prevent the field from becoming as hostile as wider academia.
FPCG has also established and supports groups in academic and economic sectors.
Jewish doctors and medical professionals who want to be involved with the Fair Play Medical Group should email medics@fairplayCG.org.uk

Notes to editors:
The Jewish Medical Association (UK) was formed last year by the merger of several UK based organisations for Jewish doctors.
The Fair Play Campaign Group (FPCG) is a coordinating vehicle for a number of UK-based Jewish and Israel organisations. Its mission is to coordinate and support efforts in opposition to proposed boycotts of Israel. FPCG provides a framework for information sharing, co-operation and effective targeting of resources.
