28 November 2006 (Jewswire.com) - The London Jewish Cultural Centre will hold a special concert bringing to a close a year of events celebrating 350 years of (acknowledged) Jewish presence in England.
The Music of the Prophets: The Return of the Jews to England on Tuesday 12 December
Michelene Wandor and the Siena Ensemble will perform The Music of the Prophets. A vividly dramatic poem interweaves with 17th century music, to evoke the London of Samuel Pepys and the Commonwealth, and the political friendship between Oliver Cromwell and Menasseh ben Israel (Menasseh petitioned Cromwell for the readmittance of the Jews).
The concert which will be held in association with the 350 anniversary group ‘3andahalf centuries Umbrella Group’, the Jewish Music Institute and the European Association for Jewish Culture is the third in a sequence of words-and-music performance pieces by Michelene Wandor, which celebrate the presence of the Jews in England.
The music is drawn from the viol consorts of John Hingeston, Cromwell’s Master of Musick, together with pieces by Orlando Gibbons, who taught Hingeston, and catches and songs by Henry Purcell, Hingeston’s pupil.
Michelene Wandor is a playwright, poet, writer and musician. Her prolific radio drama includes original plays and dramatisations, many nominated for awards.
Jennie Cassidy is one of the leading alto voices of the early music movement.
Richard Boothby is one of the founder-members of Britain’s leading viol consort, Fretwork.
Susanna Pell plays with Fretwork and the Dufay Collective.
