6 February 2007 (Jewswire.com) - The United Synagogue is delighted to announce that Rabbi Dr. Naftali Brawer has been appointed as the new Rabbi of Borehamwood & Elstree Synagogue. At a special meeting on Thursday evening, community members fully endorsed the unanimous recommendation of the Selection Advisory Group, which comprised a wide cross section of the community, the Rabbinic Selection Committee and the Board of Management. Rabbi Brawer will succeed Rabbi Alan Plancey who is retiring in the summer after almost 31 years.

The Chief Rabbi, Sir Jonathan Sacks, commented: “A fine Rabbi has been appointed to an outstanding congregation. This promises to be an exciting future for both of them.”

Stephen Forman, Chairman of Borehamwood & Elstree Synagogue, commented: “We all believe that Rabbi Brawer together with his wife Dina have the vision and experience to lead this community forward and to build on the wonderful achievements of Rabbi Alan and Miriam Plancey, who have established our synagogue as one of the leading communities both within the United Synagogue family and across the whole of Anglo Jewry.

Simon Hochhauser, President of the United Synagogue commented; “Rabbi Brawer is an innovative leader with vision, energy and a clear sense of purpose. He will be an inspiring Rav of the Borehamwood Community. His participation in our remarkable group of United Synagogue Rabbanim in Hertfordshire will ensure an exciting growth of vibrant communal life in the area.

Rabbi Brawer commented: “Borehamwood & Elstree Synagogue has established itself as one of the most exciting, vibrant and forward thinking communities. I am delighted to have been appointed as its rabbi and I look forward to the challenge of developing and leading it in the years ahead.”
