Ambassador Launches 'Israel 60'

24 October 2006 (Jewswire.com) - At a reception last night (Monday 23rd October 2006), His Excellency, Zvi Heifetz, the Ambassador of Israel, announced the launch of a major programme of events for Israel’s 60th Anniversary Year, to be co-ordinated by the Zionist Federation, in partnership with the Israel Embassy.
Israel’s history, progress and unique character will be marked by a wide variety of educational, social and cultural initiatives, as well as specialised tours of Israel, ensuring the programme will cater for all ages, tastes and experiences. A team of Israeli and British educators will tour the UK, leading seminars on a wide range of common experiences and holding public meetings with local communities, including schools and university campuses.
Director of Zionist’s Federation’s Alan Aziz will serve as Chief Executive to ‘Israel 60’, a project that will be supported by the JNF. The Zionist Federation will produce and promote monthly listings of the activities and events throughout the year. The key theme will be education; with the view to developing ‘Young Ambassadors for Israel’.
The programme will extend beyond London, with a planned programme taking place in Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Liverpool, Brighton and Birmingham as well as other regions across the UK. A major event will be held in Liverpool to co-ordinate with the Liverpool European ‘City of Culture’ 2008 programme.
The Zionist Federation will be working closely with a steering group of 60 organisations including JNF, WIZO, Jewish Agency, to co-ordinate all activities. National Chairman of Zionist Federation Andrew Balcombe commented; ‘Our objective is to be internationally focused on advocacy and national active support for Israel; through the media, events and the involvement of the whole community. We are so proud to be leading such an exciting project in partnership with the Embassy and supported by the JNF.’
The year of celebrations will culminate with a star-studded event in the Royal Albert Hall in May 2008 and invitations to attend a Gala Dinner in January 2008 have been extended to the Israeli Prime Minister and the British Prime Minster.
